RUTTER, Sydney Norman Ezekiel

No.2196747, Lance Sergeant, Sidney Norman Ezekiel RUTTER
Aged 32

No3 Bomb Disposal Company, Royal Engineers
Died on Active Service on Sunday, 1st September 1944

Thanks to the fact that his father's Army records from WW1 survived, and tracking down his son, we know a bit more about Norman (as he was known in Icklingham).

He was born on 25th March 1912 in Icklingham (Mildenhall Q1-1912 4A:1769).
His father was Ousden born Ezekiel RUTTER, a farrier, born 1881, of Flint House, Icklingham, mother Ellen Eliza (née WRIGHT) born Broome 1885. He had a sister Doris Julia Gwendoline (12-3-1908) and two brothers, Herbert Walter Thomas (27-3-1910) and Douglas Albert Belgium (5-1-1915). The siblings all born in Icklingham. That was from his father's service records, and a further sister, Daphne I.E. (Q1-1925)

The 1939 register has him, still single, ( a painter/decorater) with his parents, father [14-11-1882] a blacksmith, mother [24-2-1885] living at Flint House, Heath View, Icklingham. There are three closed records.

CWGC have him married to Ethel May RUTTER, living in Hengrave. This was the marriage in Bury St Edmunds in Q3-1939 between Sydney N.E.RUTTER and Ethel M. FOREMAN. Their son sadly never knew his father, being born after his death.

Sgt Rutter appears to have died during a mine field clearance at Easington, County Durham . He was the only Engineer to die in UK that day, so hopefully was working alone. This type of action would not have been reported in the press due to censorship issues. He was brought back to Icklingham and buried in the churchyard on September 6th 1944.
His death was registered in Holderness, Yorkshire Q3-1944 9D:89, but this was probably where he was stationed.

Norman Rutter is buried in Icklingham (St James) Churchyard, West end - new ground
and also commemorated on the Weather Heath Memorial (Elveden Column by the A11)
